Hello to Mr. A’s Former Class!
December 22nd, 2011 by nikhil4tme
Hi guys! It is probably kind of weird if Mr. Atkinson’s former class just suddenly shows up on a website that we used about two years ago, but I just thought that it would be kind of cool if I made a post after so long. I wonder if any of you are going to see this. In truth, I found myself on Mr. A’s old website for some reason, and just had to have a look around. I played questionaut and I finally beat the whole game after three years of trying! Yes! I also saw some other old blog posts by other people in our class. For example, I watched the video that Brendon put up a year ago about the “PVC Instrument”. I also read some of Jenny’s posts about China, and Michelle’s post saying “Thank you”! Okay, well that is pretty much it. Happy Holidays everyone, and it will be really really cool if you see this post after such a long time. I think that I am probably going to go right now and explore other peoples’ old blogs. Okay, Bye! -Nikhil

Another Flying Solo Post
May 12th, 2010 by nikhil4tme
Once again, the book I am reading is called Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher. You can see my last post for a summary about this book. That post also has connections, the things that background knowledge helped me with, and more. Just to tell you, that post is titled Flying Solo and has the cover of the book in the beginning of the post. Now, back to this post. I am doing this post because I came up with two thick questions. Questions can come from six different categories. Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. I did one from the Synthesis category, and the other question from the thickest category, Evaluation. Here is my question from the Synthesis category: What would happen if a teacher walked into the classroom? Would the kids be in a lot of trouble? My answer to the question would be BUSTED! It is true. Using all of the background knowledge from the book, I would say they would definitely be busted. Plus, there is background knowledge from life. Seriously, if you were in a classroom without any teacher and an adult or teacher came in, they wouldn’t let you off the hook, definitely not! Plus, like I said, there is background knowledge from the book. On page 54, a kid named Morgan comes into the classroom and realizes that they have no teacher or substitute. He gets all excited and starts dancing. Then, he tries to take candy from the teacher’s desk. All of the kids just start yelling at him to stop, and then he promised that he wouldn’t tell on them. So, if a teacher walks in, they will get into a whole bunch of trouble since they never told the truth. My next question for Evaluation is this: What do you think about this whole situation without a sub or a teacher? My answer would be any answer that says: “I would love this to happen to me, but I wouldn’t get too out of control” That is exactly what I think. I know that they aren’t doing the right thing but I know that this would be an opportunity to prove that kids are responsible. Still, I would make sure that I would still be able to have fun.

Flying Solo
May 7th, 2010 by nikhil4tme
Hello! I am reading a book for book club called Flying Solo. It is a really good book so far from the beginning, I sort of knew that this story was going to be about kids and freedom. You can probably tell from the title as background knowledge and you should look at the cover in the beginning. The freedom is between them and their teacher. This freedom came when the substitute teacher was out sick and couldn’t come to the school as a substitute. But, the kid who brought down the lunch count and the attendance didn’t mention that the substitute wasn’t there. So far, they are trying to teach themselves, but from the cover, I know that at one point everything will go crazy all because of the kids. The only connections I have to this story is what I would do in this same situation. I hope that my teacher doesn’t get mad about this, but I would do the same thing it says on the cover. Still, I would make sure that I wouldn’t go too crazy and I would be sure not to vandalize anything that is school property. I am sure that everybody in the class would agree with me, after all, I would love to see a day of school with that much freedom. In the end, I would make sure that everything gets put back and everything is okay. Another connection I had was text to text, not text to self. Bastian’s dad (a character) was in the air force. that reminded me instantly of the book Zach’s Lie. Zac’s dad was in the airplane business and had something to do with airplanes, like he was a pilot to carry cargo. The background knowledge from the cover really helped me a lot. It made me understand what the story is really about. Plus, the name “Flying Solo” let me understand that something was solo. And, since the book is about kids, it was pretty predictable. I am sure that you would understand that, too. Like I keep on saying, the cover practically gave away everything. And, it was correct. The info from the story, about the kids freedom was exactly right. It really fit in with what I already knew about the story from the cover and the title. It made sense. One sentence that Bastian kept on repeating was “Kids rule!” That was also on the cover. Plus, there is a tall girl in the sixth grade whose name is Jessica, and she is shone on the cover, or atleast that girl looks like her. (She is the one with the blond hair.) Well, I recommend this book.

Dan Cahill
April 21st, 2010 by nikhil4tme
Hi! This is a blog post on a very important character in One False Note. The Character’s name is Dan Cahill. I had a question that was: What is an important character? The important character, once again, is Dan Cahill. He may be not super important to the story’s plot, but he brings excitement to the story. First of all, he is very humorous. Here is a quote from the book: ” When it comes to hotels, bigger didn’t always mean better–but their room at Franz Josef was barely a closet. On the other hand, it was affordable, and Nellie pronounced it clean. ‘I still say we should have stayed at the hotel Wiener,’ Dan complained ‘It’s pronounces Vee-ner,’ Nellie corrected ‘And it means anyone who lives in Vienna–like Bostonians are from Boston.’ ‘It’s still funny,’ Dan insisted ‘I’m going to go over there and see if I can get any of their signs for my collection.’We don’t have time for that,’ Amy barked, setting Saladin down. The cat immediately began exploring the room, as if he thought there might be a fresher snapper hidden somewhere. ‘We made it to Vienna, but we still have no idea what to do.’ Dan unzipped Nellie’s duffel and removed his computer. ‘You can stare at musical notes until your eyes bug out,’ he said, plugging in his 220 adapter and powering up. ‘If the answer’s anywhere, it’s online.’ Amy was disgusted. ‘You think you can google the solution to all the world’s problems.’ ‘No, but I can google Mozart.’ His eyes widened. ‘Wow, thirty-six million hits! Look at this one– Mozart, the most famous Wiener of all time. I’ll bet Oscar Mayer people would give them an argument about that’ ” You probably thought that Dan is pretty funny from that huge chunk of the story. Plus, if you think about it, Dan does more than just make the story funnier, If he wasn’t in the story, I don’t think Amy and Dan would have gotten this far into the grand prize (See my other post about this book for more info about the grand prize). Plus, Dan helped with a bunch of stuff and he has photographic memory which is great for a comptition like this. In one part in this story, Dan’s memory is needed. It is when the Holts steal Mozart’s song, which was a clue. Luckily, like I said, Dan has photographic memory, so he was able to rewrite the whole thing on one paper. Plus, if it weren’t for Dan’s crazy ideas, they would have never gotten this far, like in one point, they research Mozart on the Internet, and get the same song that they have. Except, three lines were missing. That proved that those three lines were some sort of message. They could just play it on a piano, and the answer would be revealed. Anyways, you probably get my point. Make sure to read my other posts!

Adora Svitak- Prodigy☺☻☺
April 16th, 2010 by nikhil4tme
Hi! I just finished watching a short story about Adora Svitak- an amazing child prodigy. She had a speech called: “What Adults Can Learn From Kids”. It was amazing. It was also very inspiring. It makes me feel like Adora Svitak is an adult, because she acts like an adult, has smarts like adults, and other things that resemble adults. She probably actually is smarter than most adults. Also, half of her words I had never even heard of! Also, I bet half of the people in the audience didn’e even know what she meant! I am surprised that she is so smart at such a young age! Plus, she was infront of thousands of famous people like Bill Gates, and she wasn’t even nervous! I knwo I would be super nervous infront of a thousand people, mostly when they are all super famous! Also, she had such a great idea! It is true that a lot of times, adults should learn from kids! She talked about whenever kids misbehave, they are called childish, when adults are the ones who started wars and invented weapons and did all of the major bad things, when kids only do small things like breaking their mother’s favorite vase. Plus, she talked about how sometimes, when kids need to make a good decision, they do it. Whereas adults are worried about if it will be too hard, if it will cost too much, and stuff like that. Plus, (I know I keep saying plus!;-D) she wasn’t born with the knowledge, but she was born with the need to learn. She learned from books and other resources for education. I am surprised that she is in love with learning so much, and I encourage her to learn more (If there is anything more to learn
).

SURPRISING!!!
April 15th, 2010 by nikhil4tme
Hi! I am reading The 39 Clues, book 2. It is very great and surprising. The book is like something that could actually really happen. It is about the most powerful family in the world that was related to Mozart and Ben Franklin. They all try to defeat each other by finding 39 clues scattered around the world. The first person or family or group of people to get to the last clue wins world domination as the prize. There was also a choice in the beginning. If you didn’t want to go on the dangerous trip, you could just take $1,000,000 and walk away from it right at that instant. Amy and Dan Cahill are both the main characters of the story. The have a lot of competition ahead of them, and all of their heartless jerky relatives are willing to do anything to defeat them, even strangle them to their death! Anyways, the reason why I even made this blog post was to make a very important point about this amazing story. But, I sort of already gave both parts away in the title and when I was making a description of the story. The Cahill family is the most powerful family in the world that was related to geniuses like Ben Franklin and Mozart. Well, of course, that is surprising information. I mean, how would you feel if you were the most POWERFUL KID IN THE WORLD? And, how would you feel if you were RELATED TO GENIUSES LIKE BEN FRANKLIN AND MOZART? I am still in shock that this story could happen any time now, since it is possible for there to be 39 clues around the world, and for you to be a part of the most powerful family in the world. Anyways, I recommend this series!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Books 1, 2, 3, & 4
March 25th, 2010 by nikhil4tme
You have DEFFINETELY heard about the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Don’t get me started on how popular Jeff Kinney’s books are. The books are amazing, in fact they have been made into a movie. I really like the books because they are unique. The books are in cartoons and are in the format of a journal a.k.a. diary☻. Plus, the books are comedy. I can’t help myself from laughing whenever I read the book. In the first book, Greg and Rowley sign up to walk the morning kindergarteners home every day. One day, Rowley can’t come, and Greg borrows his jacket. Since Greg is by himself, he chases the kindergarteners with a stick covered in worms. An adult saw him, and mistook him for Rowley since he was wearing his jacket. So, in the end, Rowley had to apoligize for no reason. But, I don’t like that the books are so short. I can finish each of them in an hour. So, while I enjoy these books, I doubt that they are in my reading level.

Hello! I just wrote a story. This is a great story for animal lovers. It is about a guy that moves to Halifax, Nova Scotia. He finds out about some hunters and he has to try to stop them- before it is too late. By the way, it isn’t open season in the story, so it is illegal.

Greek Myths Just Got “Mythier”
March 18th, 2010 by nikhil4tme
Right now in book club, I am reading D’aulaires’ book of Greek Myths, by Edgar and Ingri Parin D’aulaire. It is making me think of Greek Myths in a whole different way. I really like this book, but there are some things that I really don’t like. Like: I like how the book is a fictional book. It is on the fantasy side with mortals and people who were immortal and people who lived for 750,000 years. I like this because it is something that would never happen, which is the kind of story I like. I also like how the author makes the book really easy to understand. I get what is going on, and I do know that all of the gods and goddesses are connected like one. They were all born from mother earth (Except Aphrodite who had no mother or father). I like this because it just makes the story easier. Mostly, I like one thing. I like how the author doesn’t set the whole thing in one gigantic story. There are several stories that use several people but just focus on one or a few people. It is good because it really gets the story organized. However, what I dislike is that at times, the story can get a little bit boring. I really don’t want to pay attention to the story and have to. Then, I finally find myself skimming without processing it and have to reread it again. The story rarely ever does anything different that it does earlier in the story. It is either that the book is boring, or the myth itself is boring. Also, the story also hardly ever has dialogue. It just says what people said, it doesn’t actually show it or take an exact quote from that myth and put it in the story. Also, I don’t like how the author is straight forward and doesn’t use any word choice or do anything fun.
Example:
Good: Luke looked fearlessly at the shameless lion, forgetting that any second, he could be trampled down till his life came to an end.
Bad: Luke didn’t care about the mean lion because he forgot that it could step on him.
The reason why it is boring is because obviously it is boring to read something boring! Plus, since I find myself skimming and have to reread it, it takes up more time.
Besides that this book can get sort of boring, it is a good book. It rarely ever gets boring and it is an easy read that is really easy to understand. So, I recommend this book to anyone that likes the Percy Jackson series, or just the Greek Myths in general. Ingri and Edgar, if you are reading this, I hope you make improvements to your future books. Thanks!

Arrows, Tigers, Time Warps, This Book Has EVERYTHING!
March 9th, 2010 by nikhil4tme
WARNING! IF YOU READ ANY FURTHER, THINGS MAY GET SPOILED!
I am reading the independent reading book of Archer’s Quest, by Linda Sue Park. This Newbery Award-Winning author also wrote the famous book, A Single Shard. This book all starts out on another boring week day. Kevin is sitting at home doing his homework. Boring, right? Suddenly, his cap suddenly flies off by a flying arrow. The next thing he knows, he is meeting Chu-Mong from the kingdom of Koguryo. But, soon, he finds out that Chu-Mong isn’t just a strange guy, he is an ancient guy!
This book is suspenseful and funny at the same time. Since Chu-Mong is from ancient times, he doesn’t know what a computer, a car, or even what glass is! It is also very suspenseful since you never know how Chu-Mong went through the time warp into the future.
